Concerns Rise Over Iran’s Nuclear Goals

(MENAFN) U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated on Wednesday that there are "plenty of indications" pointing to Iran possibly advancing toward creating a nuclear weapon.

Speaking at a Senate hearing, he responded to a question posed by Senator Lindsey Graham regarding whether Iran's nuclear efforts are aimed at weapon development rather than peaceful energy purposes.

Hegseth remarked that there is substantial evidence suggesting Iran is progressing toward a capability that resembles a nuclear weapon.

These statements were made during Hegseth's appearance before the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.

He was accompanied by General Dan Caine, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to address inquiries from lawmakers.

Senator Graham took a sharp turn in the discussion, referencing Iran’s hostile rhetoric: "As to Iran, they say they want to kill all the Jews. Do you agree with them?" Hegseth responded firmly, saying, "I believe they mean what they chant. Yes Senator."

Graham directed the same query to General Caine. Caine responded cautiously, saying, "Sir, I think they've got some agendas for sure." Graham quickly followed up with a more pointed question: "Is that agenda to use a nuclear weapon against Israel?" Caine replied, "Sir, I think they would, potentially."

Graham then pressed further, asking, "If they had a nuclear weapon, would they use it against Israel in your professional military judgment?"

Though the article ends without recording Caine’s final answer, the exchange underscored a deep concern among top U.S. defense officials regarding Iran's possible intentions if it were to obtain a nuclear arsenal.
