Egypt Holds Talks with Iran's Foreign Minister, IAEA Chief
In his conversation with Araghchi, Abdelatty stressed the urgency of resuming negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, highlighting that this remains the most effective means to foster trust and de-escalate rising tensions.
Abdelatty also reiterated the necessity of safeguarding regional stability and security through peaceful, diplomatic negotiations, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
In his dialogue with Grossi, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the IAEA's crucial role in the verification process under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He emphasized that Egypt remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the treaty, viewing it as a fundamental pillar of the global non-proliferation framework. The Egyptian Foreign Minister also expressed eagerness to continue close collaboration with the IAEA.
Additionally, Abdelatty underscored the importance of securing the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, stressing the need to prioritize diplomatic channels in addressing the Iranian nuclear issue.
In response, Grossi praised Egypt’s active role in fostering peace and stability within the region.
The diplomatic calls come against the backdrop of escalating tensions. On June 13, Israel launched a series of devastating airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, resulting in numerous fatalities, including high-ranking commanders, nuclear experts, and civilians, while many others were left injured.
In retaliation, Iran carried out multiple missile and drone strikes on Israeli soil, leading to further casualties and extensive damage. A ceasefire was eventually brokered on June 24, bringing an end to 12 days of intense conflict between the two nations.
