Iran Demands More Time Before Resuming Talks with U.S.
(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has stated that the country requires additional time before deciding on the possibility of restarting negotiations with the United States.
In an exclusive interview with a news outlet in Tehran, published Monday, Araghchi addressed the potential revival of nuclear discussions between the two nations. He responded to U.S.
President Donald Trump’s recent claim that talks could resume as early as this week, saying he did not foresee such a rapid restart. “In order for us to decide to re-engage, we will have to first ensure that the United States will not revert back to targeting us in a military attack during the negotiations,” Araghchi explained.
He emphasized, “And I think with all these considerations, we still need more time,” but reassured that “The doors of diplomacy will never slam shut.”
This development comes after heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. In an escalation on June 22, American forces bombed three key Iranian nuclear sites—Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. Iran retaliated by targeting the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
These events were part of an ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel that began on June 13, when Israel launched surprise airstrikes on multiple Iranian cities. A ceasefire was declared on June 24, but the strikes occurred just days before the scheduled sixth round of indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, set for June 15. The discussions were aimed at addressing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and the removal of U.S. sanctions.
