Turkey Launches Probe into Detentions Aboard Sumud Flotilla
In an official declaration, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the legal proceedings had been set in motion in response to the detention of 24 Turkish citizens.
The detentions followed an attack executed by units of the Israeli navy targeting the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy traveling toward Gaza with the purpose of delivering “humanitarian aid.”
Authorities are carrying out the investigation based on international and national legal frameworks.
Specifically, the case draws upon the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, along with Article 15 of the Criminal Procedure Code concerning legal jurisdiction, and Articles 12 and 13 of the Turkish Criminal Code which relate to legal responsibility.
The alleged offenses include “deprivation of liberty,” “hijacking or seizure of means of transport,” “aggravated robbery,” “damage to property,” and “torture.”
