China Calls for “Restraint” as US-Iran Tensions Escalate

(MENAFN) China called for “restraint” on Tuesday as the United States intensifies military pressure on Iran amid stalled nuclear negotiations.

“China is closely following the relevant situation. We urge all sides to remain restrained. The escalation of the situation serves no one’s interests,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.

Her remarks came in response to a question about US President Donald Trump’s comments that he was weighing a limited strike against Iran if Tehran fails to reach a deal with Washington.

Delegations from Iran and the United States are scheduled to meet in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday to resume nuclear talks, even as regional tensions spike and concerns of potential conflict rise.

The renewed negotiations coincide with an unprecedented US military buildup in the Persian Gulf and recent drills by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Trump has warned of possible military action against Iran if a deal is not finalized within 10 to 15 days.

China’s call for calm arrives as US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that Washington is “keeping all options open” while urging Iran to negotiate a nuclear agreement.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Colorado, Hegseth emphasized that Trump prefers a diplomatic solution but stressed that contingency plans are in place should Iran reject a deal.

When asked if military strikes are still being considered, Hegseth said: "Everything is on the table."

"It's the president's decision. We're here to help ensure that a deal is made. And I think Iran would be wise to make a good deal," he added.
