Turkey, Vatican Highlight Cooperation on Peace, Humanitarian Efforts

(MENAFN) Türkiye and the Vatican share overlapping views on peace initiatives and humanitarian engagement, with both sides’ efforts complementing each other on key global issues, according to Turkish Ambassador to the Holy See Fahrettin Altun.

Altun, appointed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in March and who officially began his role after presenting his credentials to Pope Leo XIV in April, spoke to a media outlet about the state of bilateral relations and areas of diplomatic cooperation between Ankara and the Vatican.

According to reports, he described his appointment as both a significant privilege and a major responsibility in representing Türkiye at the Holy See.

“It is a great honor and an equally great responsibility to serve as the Republic of Türkiye’s ambassador to the Vatican,” Altun said.

He emphasized that relations between Türkiye and the Vatican are built on a longstanding diplomatic foundation, which continues to support cooperation between the two sides.

Altun also highlighted Türkiye’s foreign policy approach, noting its focus on engaging influential international actors in addressing global crises such as the war in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and tensions involving Iran and the United States.

“The Vatican is one of these actors. The Pope is not only the head of the Vatican State but also the spiritual leader of approximately 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide,” he said.

According to reports, Altun added that the Vatican similarly values its relationship with Türkiye, viewing the country as an increasingly important regional and global partner capable of contributing to diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.
